Nintendo, everyone's favorite childhood video game company, revealed an interest in the metaverse during Japanese Q&A.
There's no doubt that video games are a natural transition for NFTs. All of us have spent countless hours of fun playing our favorite Nintendo games. Some have wondered what it would be like to keep or trade in-game items and treasuries.
However, Nintendo stopped short of committing fully to NFTs and took a more thoughtful response.
Nintendo believes in the upside of the metaverse but wants to define how it could properly be integrated into a game such as animal crossing for the sake of fun.
This brings up the debate between pro-NFT and anti-NFT gamers. Many die-hard video gamers hate NFTs because it takes all the fun out of them.
Pro-NFT gamers want to be able to grind an RPG while also selling what they've earned on a secondary market.
There seems to be a growing Anti-NFT sentiment which is a surprise considering that Web3 tools at their core empower creators. However, during hype cycles, some scammers take advantage of unsuspecting investors, which leads to people associating the entire underlying technology as a scam.
Nintendo will undoubtedly take a lot of time to think through and figure out how to integrate the metaverse into their games. However, this probably won't result in anything tangible soon as Nintendo is well known for choosing quality first over quantity.
